A wrinkle is a fold, ridge or crease in the skin.
Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes over time, reduction of collagen, damage caused by free radicals in the sun, smoking, poor hydration, etc. Genetics combined with habitual facial expression can also take a toll. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. Most people begin to notice their first wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. The most common types of wrinkles are described below.
The furrows formed from facial frowning and by the brows being wrinkled repeatedly. As elastic fibers in the skin degenerate over time, these lines have more difficulty recovering and can become permanent.
The thin lines extending from the outer corners of the eyes. This increase in number and depth as the years go by.
The creases that run straight down from the corners of the mouth. They typically form as the face begins to lose volume over time.
Saggy skin can happen almost anywhere on the body.
As skin ages, it loses two important proteins manufactured in the dermis — elastin and collagen. Elastin provides firm skin with the ability to bounce back when stretched; collagen helps skin maintain its structure and resiliency. These two proteins can also deteriorate over time due to UV exposure, pollutants, and lifestyle factors such as poor nutrition and excessive alcohol consumption. Sometimes pregnancy or significant weight loss can produce a similar effect.
