Skin pores are the external exit points of hair follicles. Think of the follicle as a straw and its pore as the opening at the top of the straw. The hair itself grows up through the straw (through layers of skin) and reaches daylight when it exits through the pore.
Dirt and oil collect around your pores on a daily basis. If you don’t clean away the debris, your pores can become clogged and turn into blackheads. If the clogs collect enough debris to work down into their follicles, they become blockages. If bacteria then works its way into the blockage, it can grow into inflammation and infection — acne. Squeezing, poking, and rubbing an inflamed pore simply adds more irritation and debris. It can also physically stretch the pore into a larger size, making it more noticeable. Loss of collagen over time may also increase the visibility of an already enlarged pore.
