Get rid of that double-chin forever!
“This is the beginning of a whole new category of injectables. Rather than filling, they’re subtracting from an area that is problematic for a lot of people. There have been attempts to dissolve fat before, but this is the first time it’s worked—and that’s pretty exciting.”
—Amy B. Lewis, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine
FAQ
What is Kybella®?
Kybella® (previously known as ATX-101) is a non-surgical injectable for reducing moderate to severe fat on the upper neck, otherwise known as a “double chin.” The injection contains a naturally occurring molecule which eats away at fat. When injected properly, all other cells are left healthy and intact. (Using Kybella® for treatment on areas other than the double-chin is not approved or recommended at this time.)
Kybella® is a deoxycholic acid injection that destroys the fat cells giving the appearance of a double chin. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. As of now, the safe and effective use of Kybella® targets only subcutaneous fat in the submental (double-chin) region.
What happens during and after a Kybella® treatment?
The doctor will recline the examination chair and numb the area with lidocaine. She’ll apply a template under the chin, like a temporary tattoo of tiny dots spaced one centimeter apart. She then injects small amounts of Kybella® next to each dot.
Once injected—somewhere between 10 and 25 pokes in one session—Kybella® begins destroying the fat cells. Within 15 to 20 minutes, the treatment is complete. Results take four to six weeks to show, at which point the doctor will assess how many more treatments are needed (if any).
In clinical studies, patients saw desired results with two to four Kybella® treatments spaced approximately one month apart. It is important to note that the safe and effective use of Kybella® depends on the correct number and location of the injections, proper needle placement, and skilled administration techniques.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments is based on your desired chin profile. Many clients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, the doctor will administer Kybella® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.
- In clinical studies, results for Kybella®-treated patients who had a ≥1-grade composite improvement were 8% (1 treatment), 28% (2 treatments), 43% (3 treatments), 55% (4 treatments), 66% (5 treatments) and 72% (6 treatments)
- In clinical studies, results for Kybella®-treated patients who had a ≥2-grade composite improvement were 0% (1 treatment), .2% (2 treatments), .8% (3 treatments), 3.5% (4 treatments), 3.9% (5 treatments) and 15% (6 treatments)
- 59% of subjects in the clinical trials received all 6 treatments
How long do the treatments last?
Kybella® treatments last indefinitely. Once you reach your optimal level of correction, there is no reason for further treatments.
Who is a candidate for Kybella®?
Anyone over the age of 18 who is bothered by a double-chin can be a candidate. Once the doctor determines if Kybella® is the treatment of choice, she will tailor a plan for optimal results. How many people have been treated with Kybella®?
Kybella® has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which over 1,600 have been treated with Kybella®.
Are there any side effects?
The safety profile of Kybella® is well characterized. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. Kybella® can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. The doctor will go over all this information with you in detail so you can make an informed decision.
