No More Active Acne!
How does BBL™ work?
The bacteria responsible for acne is called p‑acne. The shorter wavelengths of BBL™ in the blue‑light spectrum, attack p‑acne bacteria on the skin’s surface and in the sebaceous glands. P‑acne can be killed by either a light treatment with a blue light or a deeper laser treatment targeting bacteria beneath the surface.
The treatment is simple, quick, pain-free, and requires no downtime. It is appropriate for mild to moderate acne. BBL™ is especially effective in women who experience localized acne on their chins, adult hormonal acne for men and women, and teenage acne. Along with a home skin care program designed for acne‑prone skin, clients can experience significant long-term clearance.
After a careful evaluation of the skin condition and desired results, we may suggest combining a weekly routine of blue light BBL™ with medical facials and/or medical grade skin care products such as SkinCeuticals. Because skin can clog pores where p‑acne bacteria often reside, unclogging pores can also be extremely beneficial.

FAQ
Does BBL™ help with anti-aging?
BBL™ is an excellent treatment for anti-aging. Check our IPL /BBL™ Photofacial page for details.
How do I prepare for a BBL™ acne treatment?
The doctor will advise you appropriately during the acne consultation. It’s extremely important to communicate all prescription medications you’re using, especially those for treating your acne. You must refrain from using acne medications for a certain period of time prior to any laser treatment to avoid unexpected skin reactions.
How many treatments will I need?
Clinical studies suggest that at least two BBL™ acne treatments are needed to begin to see results. A marked difference in the condition of your acne generally appears after the third treatment. Most patients experience about a 70% improvement. Results have been reported to last up to six months. Typically, we recommend a series of six sessions with two during the first week, followed by two-week treatment intervals. Most patients experience 90% improvement of their acne after their sixth session.
What happens during and after a BBL™ treatment?
A thin film of gel is applied to your skin. The technician will roll the BBL handpiece gently over your target areas. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, maybe a little heat or electric tingling. Treatment sessions last 20-30 minutes. After treatment is completed, some may experience temporary reddening and minimal swelling of the acne and surrounding skin for 1-2 days. This is transient and usually associated with minimal to no downtime. Makeup can be applied immediately if desired.
Do I have to take oral medications to treat acne effectively?
BBL™ has now proven to be helpful in the treatment of acne. Micropeels with or without dermaplaning and micro-needling also offer alternative ways to remove persistent and stubborn acne.
What causes acne?
Acne occurs when hair follicle pores are blocked by natural components of the skin. This is the root of most acne lesions. Once blocked, inflammation and bacteria overgrowth occur leading to red bumps and cysts in the skin. Sebaceous or sweat glands of the skin can contribute excessive amounts of sebum into the plugged follicle increasing inflammation. Hormones can also play a role.
Most teenagers are affected to some degree. Adults, often, get acne for the first time while others have suffered since the teenage years. Acne is not life-threatening, but it can cause physical disfigurement (scarring) and emotional distress if not treated early. Treatment for acne varies depending on which of the above factors is causing your acne. This is different for each person. On average, results are visible in six to eight weeks with topical cosmeceuticals such as our SkinCeuticals medical grade skin care lines.
